Champéry has retained the interest of the traveller since 1850 due to the beauty of the countryside, the fresh air, the large forests and the contact with the inhabitants of the village. In 1890, the women shared the work with the men. They wore the male dress when looking after the cattle or when working in the fields. Their hair was covered by a red scarf, which, still today, is very much used. In Champéry the chalets are often a piece of art. Four characteristics distinguish them : the size and the form of the canopy, the lodge built on the ground floor, the rounded corners of the balconies and the crucifix, which is situated in the axe of the canopy. But Champéry is above all an outstanding place for excursions going from simple walks and ordinary hikes to great ascents of les Dents-du-Midi and La Tour Sallière.
