In the 12th Century, the lords of la Chapelle occupied a fortified castle. At that time the castle was named Vignoly, and was situated to the west of the Church, in what was the location of the seigniorial château up to the revolution. In the 16th century the castle was left in a sorry state after being invaded in 1563 mercenary cavalrymen of German origin, the damage caused by the wars of religion and time taking its toll. After the revolution the castle was uninhabitable, having been partly demolished and reduced to rubble, completely stripped of all its feudal features such as the dovecote and the drawbridge. On 2 April 1777, F.E. Elie de Moustier married Louise Millet and became the owner of both the castle and the land. It is one of his descendants, Audéric de Moustier, who had the new Château de la Chapelle built between 1848 and 1850 in the sumptuous style of the era. It was built on a gentle slope and in a drier location than the former castle.
